Adaptive Re-use of historic Sure-Gain/Fletcher Mill Building in Inglewood.
This project transforms one of Calgary’s most intriguing, historic industrial buildings into the new home of Smithbilt Hats, with a residential space as well. The Fletcher Mills Building (also known as Shur-Gain) has been located in Calgary’s neighbourhood of Inglewood for over 100 years. Having suffered several major fires and being left unused for many years, the unique and interesting industrial structure is being adapted, rebuilt, and expanded to provide enough space for Smithbilt Hats' Manufacturing and Sales Activities. The unique residential component will be housed in the former elevator structure above the lower levels. The project has involved significant consultation with the City and community and is ideally sited adjacent to the future Inglewood/Ramsay Greenline LRT station, where the building’s form and massing will serve as a marker of arrival in this vibrant community. The amazing characteristics of the light and heavy wood construction will be highlighted in the new interiors while the sparse industrial exterior finishes will be retained in contrast with contemporary expressions from the new construction. This project owes much to the strong vision and commitment of our client.
