Placeworksdesign is an architectural design studio focused on meaningful, appropriate, sustainable, and people-oriented residential and commercial projects throughout the West. Essential to our notion of exceptional modern design, we believe in strong relationships, collaboration, and bringing together inspiration and the needs presented by the client. Founded in 1998, Placeworks is a vibrant, full-service practice located in the heart of Calgary's neighbourhood of historic Inglewood.
We’re a tight-knit group comprised of an expert bagpiper, an all-weather fly fisher, a prairie based, high performance sailor, and a traditional hula dancer so we consider ourselves to be different from the rest. But what makes us stand out, professionally?
We’re open to collaboration – with everyone. Clients, builders, engineers, consultants, trades… the list goes on! The best projects are results of a team effort so we’re always open to hearing the opinions of all others who are working on a job with us.
There isn’t much we’ll say no to, in terms of project type or scope. We love unique projects because they pose a new set of design challenges, allowing us to stretch our minds and express our design and problem-solving skills. Big or small, commercial or residential, we love hearing about new job opportunities and exploring what it would mean to bring these projects to completion so don’t be afraid to approach us with your requests.
We don’t have one specific design “style” that we use for all projects. Design needs to be functional which means that we can’t force our own specific wants and needs on a client. Although we will offer professional advice, opinions, preferences, and suggestions, we strive to work with the client’s desired aesthetics, functional requirements, and budget so that they are getting a space that they can use and that they feel good being in. Our design proposals are not “one size fits all;” we draft each one up as a new, individual document because we believe each project should be one-of-a-kind.
We think that the keys to a successful project are communication and transparency. Pretty straight forward; no one has time for guessing games and a project moves along a lot faster when there is communication between all parties involved. We like the efficiency of being honest; it makes a job run more smoothly.
We value relationships; we enjoy getting to know our clients and the others we get to work with on all varieties of projects. For us, part of the fun is discovering new people to work with based off of recommendations, project specifics, and client relationships, too. We also love to continue to develop relationships with builders, suppliers, and trades who have been delightful to work with on previous jobs. It’s all about the people!
